The History of Corduroy
This iconic wavy textile traces its history all the way back to fustian — a heavy, woven fabric invented in Ancient Egypt. Flash forward a couple centuries to 18th Century England, when they began weaving pile-cut cotton to create the signature soft cords or ridges we’re most familiar with today. Its durable nature and warmth made it perfect for working in factories during the Industrial Revolution, and it was later adopted as part of military uniforms during World War II.
Corduroy remained a staple, working-class fabric and existed under the fashion radar until its popularity exploded in the 1960s and 1970s. It became the counterculture’s fabric of choice and was worn as a symbol of anti-establishment by students, beatniks, and popular creatives. An iconic moment in fashion, many of these looks have come back into style today (we’re looking at you, Harry Styles).
