The government of Mexico has decided to create one of the greatest contributions to marine conservation, located just about 242 miles southeast of the Baja California peninsula, officially establishing itself as a national park. The purpose that lies behind the creation of this grand design is to conserve whales, turtles, giant rays, and dozens of other local species that harbor the area.
The president of Mexico, Enrique Pena Nieto finalized the coming events that would introduce the establishment as Revillagigedo Archipelago. However, this is just one of the names that has been made for this place, with the handful of people who refer to it as the Galapagos of North America.
This is because of the four volcanic islands that make the entirety of Revillagigedo Archipelago as well as the menagerie of sea life, migratory birds, lizards, and plants that can be found all around the national park, are in reference to the volcanic Ecuadorean islands and some of the species inspired by the famous biologist Charles Darwin.
Fishing is extremely prohibited around the national park, since it is aimed at reserving the area so that commercialized fish such as sierra and tuna can continue to breed. The Archipelago has even prohibited the amount of hotel infrastructure that can be created on the islands. The Environment Ministry and Navy, as instructed by Pena Nieto, “Will carry out surveillance, equipment and training activities that will include remote monitoring in real time, environmental education directed at fishermen and sanctions against offenders.”
This even means that the islands will protected against any kind of natural resources being taken from the surrounding environment. Limitations will be very necessary for the protection of this new aid to the improvement of marine life for the future. The director of conservation of WWF in Mexico, Maria Jose Villaneuva, states that this movement is an important precedent to the rest of the world.
If you are an environmental activist you really have to consider the benefits to not having any kind of commercial use for this island other than exploration and conservation of the natural environment that it encompasses. Further study into marine life habits as well as better ways to take care of them will prove useful through the design of this amazing creation in the ocean. Hopefully we can see more projects like these aimed to conserving more of our worlds dire environmental needs.
The planet cannot heal some of these man-made wounds all on its own, we must do our part in doing whatever is necessary for earth’s survival as well as our own survival. Many more species will come to this conservation looking for help with their survival whenever it is needed most and the Archipelago will be there to answer that call.
The overall goal for this marine life park is so that humanity will be able to help recover fish populations that are constantly fished commercially. This project has the full support by the World Wildlife Fund as well as the British billionaire, Richard Branson.
