Poshmark x tentree: A Sustainable Dream Team

We’ve teamed up with Poshmark to do some good for the planet, clear your closets, and plant 30k trees while we’re at it.

While we may love new trends and the confidence-boosting power of a newly purchased outfit, fashion has a lot to answer for when it comes to our current environmental woes. Estimates vary, but the fashion industry is responsible for between 4 and 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. At tentree, we’re well aware of this not-so-great statistic and are doing our part by creating sustainable clothing made with practices and materials that are kind to our planet.

But while we may be doing our part behind the scenes, it’s up to you as a consumer to make your clothing last and ensure your outfits don’t end up in the trash. As it stands today, a shocking 48 million tons of textiles end up as waste every year, 73% of which end up in landfills. Not only does binning your clothes waste money and resources, but it can take 200+ years for the materials to decompose.

We’ve covered the facts, but let’s be honest. It’s unrealistic to think that you’re never going to get bored of an outfit or have the need to let some clothes go. It’s bound to happen now and again, and when it does, the key is to let go of your old styles sustainably. And lucky for you, we know just the platform to help.

Meet Poshmark — a simple and fun social marketplace for buying, selling, and discovering new and secondhand styles. Poshmark is the perfect destination to make a little money off those jeans that no longer fit or a shirt that isn’t your style anymore while also doing good by the planet. With the average consumer throwing away 60% of clothing within a year of purchase, Poshmark is helping to preserve resources, reduce waste, and reduce consumption by promoting circularity.

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, switching to circular models — including resale and secondhand — could help the fashion industry cut around 143 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Poshmark is leading the secondhand charge with over 60 million community members across the U.S and Canada, proving that you don’t have to compromise style to support sustainability.

Be your best sustainable self and make a little extra money? We know it sounds too good to be true, but before you rush to your closet to dig out those pieces you’re ready to say goodbye to, let us fill you in on a really cool one-day campaign Poshmark is hosting on Monday.

In collaboration with tentree, Poshmark is committing to plant 30k trees. On September 27th, for each item listed for sale on Poshmark, they’ll plant a tree in Canada. Huge, right? This one-day tree-planting campaign allows users to double-down on doing good for the planet by keeping preloved clothing, accessories, and home goods out of landfills and planting a tree that will offset carbon emissions. This is a win-win for the planet and your wallet and one small step closer to creating a more sustainable future together.

If you don’t already have a Poshmark account, make sure you set one up before September 27th, use code POSHCANADA upon registration for $15 CAD off your first purchase.

Make sure to check back here after the campaign to see how many trees you and the Poshmark community planted.
