A 150 foot tall iceberg recently graced a small fishing village on the east coast of Canada, and an influx of tourists came with it. It’s not uncommon for icebergs to come through the area. Ferryland, where the iceberg appeared, is sometimes called “iceberg alley.” But this was an all together different experience.
Photographers from around the world flocked to Ferryland to get a glimpse of the iceberg, and by no means did it disappoint.
Most icebergs just float on by, but this one has actually gotten itself anchored in a shallower area of water, making it a semi-permanent resident of Ferryland. Locals don’t seem to upset about it though. It’s serving as a huge economic boon from all the town’s new visitors.
‘When they come in along the shoreline, and go grounded, we are very happy about that,’ said Barry Rogers, who works as a skipper at Quest Ocean Tours.
Last year, about 687 icebergs moved through the region’s shipping lanes. Already this year, 616 have moved by Ferryland. Global warming is being blamed for the shift, with more icebergs breaking off of larger ice sheets in the Arctic.
