Humanity’s impact on the planet is something that cannot be denied, although many try. The science is fully settled on climate change, but unfortunately the politics aren’t.
Skeptical or not, the planet is warming and the climate is changing as a result and humans are at least partially to blame for it. By burning fossil fuels with reckless abandon, we’ve unintentionally changed the composition of our atmosphere.
For most of human history, the atmosphere has contained 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide. Recently, we’ve passed the 400 parts per million mark, which pushes us closer to a runaway greenhouse gas effect, making the effects of climate change largely irreversible by available technology.
A new study assesses that without intervention, within the next 100-200 years, our atmosphere could contain more carbon dioxide that at any other period since the Triassic some 200 million years ago.
Fluctuations of the composition of our atmosphere are normal. Scientists have studied 420 million years worth of data, captured in ice and rock, that show this to be the case. But what’s scary is that the climate is changing faster than at any point in nearly a half a billion years.
The climate can change for numerous reasons, like volcanic activity for example. But nothing has had the impact on the climate like we humans have.
