What is carbon offsetting?
To start, let’s look at what carbon offsetting means.
Carbon offsetting is a process that involves a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide in order to compensate, or offset, an emission already made elsewhere.
For example, there’s no way we can avoid releasing some amount of carbon dioxide in our production process (although we work super hard to make sure it’s as small as possible) but we can offset the carbon dioxide we’re releasing by planting trees that absorb carbon.
What does the term ‘Climate+’ mean?
Building on carbon offsetting, the term net-zero (or carbon neutral) means there is a balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount that’s removed from the atmosphere. For example, as a company, we achieve net-zero by calculating our carbon footprint for a year and then offset that amount by planting trees.
Climate+ means going above and beyond net-zero by doing more than just offsetting carbon emissions. Climate+ actions create an environmental benefit by removing additional carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and doing something positive for the planet.

Once I buy a Climate+ Package, how are my emissions offset?
After you’ve checked out with one of our Climate+ Packages, we get to planting. Trees do something called ‘sequestering carbon’; it’s their way of cleaning our air, and eliminating harmful elements from the earth. They do this by absorbing the CO2 and storing the carbon.
We recognize that there are many ways to offset carbon, but we are confident that our tree planting initiatives provide the most meaningful, holistic, and verified impact on our Earth. Tree planting has an impact that reaches far beyond carbon sequestration. They provide homes for wildlife, which in turn can provide an additional food source and income for locals in certain areas. In addition to the environmental benefits, our tree planting initiatives employ people from local communities.
How do I know the trees I purchased are actually being planted?
You can confidently purchase our Climate + Packages and know your trees are being planted thanks to veritree – a tree planting technology we created ourselves that gives quick and reliable data on when and where a specific tree was planted. Over time, we realized that a lot of organizations didn’t have the tools to verify that a tree had been put in the ground. It’s common for saplings to be double-counted or improperly labelled. Using traditional methods, like remote sensing, to track planting initiatives leaves a lot of room for error and inaccurate data collection. But veritree uses something called blockchain technology. This technology ensures that every single step of the tree planting journey is traceable, logged, and can’t be tampered with.
veritree’s all about collecting ground-level data, which resolves a lot of the traceability issues we mentioned. Collecting ground-level data not only provides job opportunities in local communities where planting initiatives take place but enables precise tracking for each tree planted.
What type of trees are being planted and where?
Through our Climate+ Packages, we primarily plant mangrove trees in Madagascar and Indonesia and Acacia trees in Senegal, and Avocado trees in Haiti. Mangrove trees, in particular, are one of the most efficient carbon sequestering trees in the world, and planting them provides much more than a carbon impact for our planet.
